The insurer will "require applicants to join a guaranteed weight loss program and assert that they are tobacco-free in order to be considered for a position," said Rob Schweers, spokesman for Wellmark, which employs approximately 1,600 people in Des Moines and another 200 throughout the rest of the state.A smoker usually costs an employer about $3,000 annually in additional medical costs and loss of productivity, according to a study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. But that was just one factor in Wellmark's decision, Schweers said.
